Our History
Our History
Late 1980s: Where It All Began
Four entrepreneurs started Algonquin Power, a renewable energy developer based in Canada, with a focus on acquiring and developing projects. The company acquired a portfolio of small hydro sites in Canada and the U.S., laying the groundwork for decades of clean energy investments and growth.
Our History
1990s - 2000s: Diversification and Expansion
In 2001, the company diversified into the utility business, acquiring a series of water utilities in Arizona. After further expanding the hydro portfolio, the company focused on wind energy projects, developing and building one of the first large scale projects in Canada, the 104 MW St. Leon Wind project in Manitoba, reaching operations in 2006.
Our History
2010s – 2020s: Growth Through Expertise
The company grew rapidly during these years, developing, acquiring and building over 1,000 MW of wind and solar projects, and building a large development pipeline. Utility growth continued, investing $3.4 billion USD in acquiring large electric, gas, and water utilities including the CalPeco and Empire District Electric utilities, and separating into its Liberty Power and Liberty Utilities businesses.
Our History
2025: Clearlight Energy Formed
Clearlight Energy was formed when LS Power acquired the Liberty Power business, then a 3 GW portfolio of operating clean energy assets as well as a 1.2 GW pipeline of development projects in North America. Soon thereafter, the company acquired a 1.3 GW portfolio of operational wind projects in the U.S., further strengthening and diversifying the operational portfolio.
Our History
Today: Operational Excellence and Strategic Growth
Clearlight Energy now operates with a renewed and clear mission of operational excellence, optimizing and capitalizing on our diverse portfolio of generation assets to unlock additional value.
